Best Places for Engagement Photos in Los Angeles (With Tips from a Local Photographer)
Starts tapping mic, for a soundcheck and crowd attention:
Planning your engagement session in Los Angeles? You’re in the right place.
As a wedding photographer based in LA, I’ve shot sessions across the city — from iconic landmarks to hidden gems — and I know how to make each one feel personal to you.
Whether you’re dreaming of something casual and candid or styled and editorial, here’s a list of the best engagement photo locations in Los Angeles, plus tips to make the most of your session.
1. Griffith Park & Griffith Observatory
Why it works:
Epic views of the city, golden light at sunset, and an iconic backdrop without feeling too “posed.” There’s space to explore and create a variety of looks in one session.
Pro tip:
Weekdays are best. It gets crowded, especially near the observatory, so an early morning or weekday session gives you more freedom and less foot traffic. Bring a comfy pair of shoes to change in/out of while in between pictures.
2. El Matador State Beach (Malibu)
Why it works:
Dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and a soft, romantic vibe. Ideal for barefoot-in-the-sand energy or a more editorial look with contrast.
Pro tip:
This location looks dreamy at golden hour but is tide-dependent. I always check the tide chart before booking a time. Bring a change of clothes just in case you’re willing to go above and beyond for the shot (do it, the water doesn’t bite).
3. Vista Hermosa Natural Park
Why it works:
A hidden gem in DTLA with greenery and a clear skyline view. Quiet, intimate, and close to the city without feeling like it.
Pro tip:
This is a great place if you want a mix of city and nature without traveling too far.
4. Arts District & Downtown LA
Why it works:
Street art, grungy textures, modern architecture — perfect for couples who want something a little less traditional and more personal or editorial.
Pro tip:
Wear outfits with bold lines or soft contrast to play off the environment. Great for statement looks and fashion-forward vibes.
5. Venice Canals & Beach
Why it works:
You get charm, texture, color, and beach all in one place. The Venice Canals bring a romantic, quiet energy, and you’re a quick walk from the beach.
Pro tip:
Arrive early, plan to park and walk — and consider booking this for sunrise or early morning for softer light and fewer crowds. If you’ve got a little extra mulah, rent a boat on the canal, the end result *chef’s kiss*.

We live in LA, arguably one of the prettiest and most versatile canvases in the U.S. If you are your fiancé are a lot simpler or none of the above locations pass the vibe check, keep it simple. A street with palm trees, or one of your favorite date night places might just be what you’re looking for. You are the most important part of this whole process, do you!
Tips for a Great Engagement Session in LA:
Outfit Planning: Stick to 2 looks max — one casual, one elevated. Avoid logos or overly busy prints, you don’t have to be matchy but coordinate.
Timing Matters: Golden hour (an hour before sunset) is your best friend for soft, warm, flattering light.
Permits: Some locations may require photo permits — Especially in LA, security will shut down shoots, I can guide you through what’s needed.
Be Yourselves: The best sessions happen when you’re relaxed. Bring your favorite music, a drink, or something that helps you feel grounded.
Why Book an Engagement Session at All?
It’s not just about pretty pictures. Engagement sessions help you get comfortable in front of the camera, build trust with your photographer (me!), and capture the in-between, everyday kind of love — before the big day. They also make great save-the-date invitations.
